How to Fix a Leaking Pond???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Our pond is fed by 3 underground springs... problem is that the pond floor is flatrock, but has developed a leak. We've found the spot in question, but are wondering how to fix it - especially concerned about harming the life that inhabits and drinks from the pond. Draining the pond doesn't seem to be an option, the water runs into it continuously from the springs. Any ideas?

Thank you.

Denise This probably won't help because of the rock bottom but a good friend of mine put pigs out in the pasture by his leaky pond. They love to work up the earth and did a great job of resealing his pond. Could you divert the water and fill in the leak with cement or the stuff you paint on cisterns to seal them? karen

With a rock bottom I would check for crayfish, crawfish, crawdads. Some speices of these can burrow for hundreds of feet, hence draining the pond. Try setting a minnow trap on the bottom of the pond with liver or some other meat inside. If you have a bunch the next day it is time to have; Crayfish Boil, Creamed Crayfish or Crayfish Bisque.

If the bottom is solid rock get some vinyl swimming pool concrete an fill the leak up with it. You don't have to remove the water.
