Title: CABLE INTERRUPTION: A software problem knocked out service beginning Thursday night to about 20,000 customers of Cox Communications throughout Rhode Island. Cox reported yesterday that it has fixed the problem but it may take until Sunday for service to be restored to some customers. The glitch affected four computers that control set-top boxes in customers' homes. Those boxes must be reprogrammed in order to work properly again. Cox reprograms the boxes automatically, several hundred per hour, by sending signals over its cable network. Greg Bicket, vice president and general manager, said Cox will automatically issue service credits to the customers who lost service.
