OREAD -- April 2000

The OREAD is the unofficial e-mail newsletter of Orienteer Kansas. There is also an OREAD home page at http://www.geocities.com/colosseum/field/7306. Both the home page and the e-mail newsletter are edited by Michael Eglinski (meglin@juno.com).

COMING EVENTS

April 15 -- The Johnson County Parks Department and Possum Trot OC are hosting a map and compass clinic at Ernie Miller Park. I am not sure if it is still possible to register or not. Contact Johnson County Parks for info (pre-registration is required) at 913-831-3355.

April 16 -- Possum Trot is hosting a meet at Shawnee Mission Park. Registration is noon to 1:30. Registration is at shelter 9. Paul Akin (PFAkin@aol.com) is the meet director.

INTERESTING WEB PAGE

Mikell Platt -- the top US orienteer for the last 10 years or so, is keeping a journal about his O' adventures. He is currently living in Sweden and providing regular updates of everything from his training to Swedish food. The page is at:

OK DISCUSSION FORUM

A lot more news about orienteering and OK is at the OK discussion forum. The forum is at:

http://www.geocities.com/okansas.geo/

The forum is not yet used by many people. But, it is fairly active -- there are typically a couple of messages posted each day. Topics are wide ranging -- there are descriptions of local or national events, discussions of interesting web pages related to orienteering, and all sorts of other miscellaneous stuff.

Answers

A coming event I forgot to include in the OREAD is the North American Rogaine Championships. The Champs are the weekend or April 15/16 and are hosted by the St. Louis O' Club. The event is based at Johnson Shut-Ins State Park.

I think some local orienteers -- Mike Shifman, the Neuburgers, and Gary Thompson -- are planning to compete.

Make sure they visit Hell's teeth, or whatever that place was near Taum Sauk that we liked so much when we (Mike Eglinski and I) were there in '97!
