Diesel costs force electricity rates up

March 30, 2000: Electricity users on Rarotonga will be paying more for the service as from Monday 3 May due to the increased cost of the diesel that fuels the Avatiu Power Station

Te Aponga Uira (Rarotonga Electricity Authority) in announcing the increase yesterday in a media release stated that Prime Minister, Dr Terepai Maoate, and his government have acknowledged that due to the dramatic increase in oil prices over the last year it is now necessary to increase tariffs for the long term viability of Te Aponga and thus maintain the investment for a continuous reliable electricity supply.

Te Aponga says it cannot rule out any further increase tariffs in a few months as this depends mainly on the fuel price and if demand continues to rise.
