Digital Photography of Historic Artifacts

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am in search of a few ideas and/or hints regarding taking pictures of historic artifacts using a digital camera. (Olympus digital) My questions would be: What type of lighting would be used and What type of background should be used? The pictures will be taken indoors.

thanks much.

What kind of artifacts are you talking about. It makes a big difference if you are photographing an arrowhead as opposed to a stage coach. Also it is important to know what you want to do with the photos. For instance if it is for reference purposes you may want to include something in the photo that allows the viewer to approximate size (eg. A ruler for the arrowhead - a horse for the stagecoach).
