Old Mr. & Mrs. Hall

Why is it that Harry's parents can torment him and Ruth with there butting in and they never say anything to eachother? There are nice ways to say that your spouse's parent(s) are making you unhappy. A marriage is supposed to be based on communication, so why do they keep these things so to themselves?

I think it was because back then a wife was supposed to be seen not heard, and with ruth growing up in a family that didn't care for her has a lot to do with it. she seems like she don't know how to handle the situation, there for she has to just sit back and take it.

I don't even think the subject about Harry's parents came up between Ruth and Harry. They never really discuss how miserable it's making Ruth. And since it never comes up, I think that Ruth doesn't want to make a big deal, hoping everything will clear with time. Harry is so good to her that it seems she would do anything to keep him from being unhappy, she would even sacrifice her own happiness. It's too bad Mrs. Hall couldn't see that. You'd think that's the kind of spouse your parent's would want you to have.
