Within 10 minutes, two planes made emergency landings Wednesday morning at Tampa International Airport for unrelated mechanical concerns, airport officials said.

Continental Flight No. 1857 had left Fort Lauderdale for Houston when the pilot landed at TIA about 7:30 a.m. because of a reported fuel filter problem. Brenda Geoghagan, airport spokeswoman, said the pilot wanted to check the problem before crossing the Gulf of Mexico.

The 81 passengers aboard the Boeing 737 were transferred to another plane and departed 30 minutes later.

About 7:40 a.m., airport controllers allowed a US Airways Express flight carrying seven people to make an emergency landing. That plane, a Beechcraft 1900, had departed Tallahassee and was going to West Palm Beach, but stopped in Tampa because of low cabin pressure.

Upon landing, the pilot realized the cargo door was not secure. Passengers were transferred to another plane and left at 10 a.m., Geoghagan said.

On average, a plane makes an emergency landing about once every other month, Geoghagan said. - From staff and wire reports
