Crutches? (Partial Spoiler)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

Now, WHY doesn't Carter have crutches in this eppy? Are we THAT far into recovery that all he needs is a limp? It seems like they are just dropping this storyline because they don't know what to do. However, the previews for next week's ER seems really good.. Apparently Carter "goes too far" with a patient, and a "gohst from the past" reappears and Carol tells Mark that Doug called and wants her to move to Seattle. I'm just glad that the next new episode is next week.

i was thinking the same thing about carter and the crutches. didn't somebody say he'd be on crutches for an episode, then have a cane for a couple, or something like that?

When did it say "ghost from the past" reappers? I'll have to go watch it again. Oh well!

Anyways, according to tvguide.com, there will be a repeat for April 20th. I think they are dropping the whole Carter "problem with drug" thing, or they actually never intended to use that story line. That is what we get for believing the tabloids. Frustrating, I am almost thinking that I don't want to know anymore spoilers from now on.

YA RIGHT!! HA HA :-)

Yes, Marcia. Noah Wyle said on the Rosie show that he would be on crutches for two shows then a cane for one and then all hell brakes loose. Makes you kind of wonder if they are changing the whole idea of Carter having problems, like I said above.

I totally forgot that he's supposed to get hooked on pain killers! He did not show any pain at all in Viable Options (except a limp) Maybe they did drop this, however, next week does not sound like they are dropping Carter's problems...maybe they will be more emotional. It is odd that they changed this crutches and cane thing so fast though. They were just doing the previous episode on the Rosie show (when Wyle said he would be on crutches and then a cane). Too bad, he looked cute hobbling on crutches!

I am thinking the same thing as all of you guys. But then I started thinking, when Romano was yelling at Cleo and Peter for the drug perscription mix up, he told them they were suspended from writing their own scripts until further notice and he said Carter could do it for them for now. Think this will lead into the self medicating storyline? Just a thought. Other than that, the eppy was 'ok'. I was expecting more, but as usual, the previews are always overly dramatic. Guess time will tell.

On Rosie, Noah said Carter would get a hematoma on his spine that would cause him pain. (On the video of that show, I just had to turn the volume up and listen really close to the TV. You could hear that even though they tried to block it out. I think somebody on this board mentioned that's what he said, also.) Anyway, maybe it is something that will develop later. Or maybe they aren't going to do it after all.

I believe the words in the preview were "...A voice from the past..." not "a ghost."

Jeez - I think it is OBVIOUS that Carter is going to get addicted to painkillers, now that they put that bit in with him being authorized to write scripts for other doctors! Can't we take the hint? He'll probably be prescribing meds for phantom patients now, and nobody will suspect a thing.

In fact, I'm even wondering if Carter is already taking the painkillers. That would be a cool twist. If he's living at Gamma's house, it's possible that he's raiding someone's medicine cabinet. That would be the most realistic thing. Addiction happens very slowly and most people don't mean for it to happen.

I can guess that Carter is taking some sort of painkillers. And it has been almost two months since the attack. I don't know if that makes a real difference with if he has crutches or not, but it's probably easier for the writers if he doesn't. As for the painkiller thing, I'm thinking it'll happen. There's definite place. Loved the look though, when he bundled up to hint that Romano seemed a bit cold.

Jess, good call. I didn't catch that. Carter being allowed to write more perscriptions would be a good intro into his addiction... if he is to have one.

I think that Carter could have had the cane at least in this epi since he wasn't in it as much as he was in "Under Control"... but seeing how Carol mentioned it was April at the end and the attack happened in February maybe realistically he wouldn't be needing that kind of aide anymore. I don't know.

What is a hematoma? I know this comes up a lot in ER, but I don't remember. I do remember now that Rosie says something to someone (Anthony Edwards?) that she heard Carter would have problems walking later, so he COULD develop a hematoma later on right? I am kind of mad that they misled us on Rosie, maybe the writers got mad that they let too much info. get out and changed it, but it's not like they gave the whole story away. Maybe Carter will have to go back to crutches. Although from the looks of it, his "pain" storyline seems to be over. He looks to be recovering fine. Maybe he's hiding it???

-- Elaine (mrsclooney78@hotmail.com), April 07, 2000.

I think some people are reading entirely too much into Wyle's *exact* statements on Rosie... about the crutches for 2 eps, cane for 1 thing. Probably he had some vague idea of the storyline the writers would be taking Carter through, and that was the best information HE himself had at the time. Isn't it very clear that that is the way the story is going (Carter in pain, slow recovery, emotional problems, lying, and now, access to writing prescriptions)? Come on folks, pay attention to the actual SHOWS... just because Wyle's report to Rosie hasn't been correct in every last detail doesn't mean the writers changed the general direction of the storyline. It's going to play out very sloooooooooooowlyyyyyyyyyyy....

Hematoma = A localized swelling filled with blood resulting from a break in a blood vessel.

Basically a hematoma is a fancy way of saying a "bruise."

-- Lindz (Sweetpea@conk.com), April 08, 2000.

Not really. I had a hematoma once in my mouth after wisdom teeth were extracted. I was told it was a rock-hard mass of congealing blood (ew) and it had to be treated with clove oil (yucky tasting). I feel sorry for anyone who has one pressing against their spinal cord!
