A US Airways jet carrying 48 passengers and a crew of five made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff Monday when a flight attendant smelled smoke.
The DC-9 returned safely to Norfolk International Airport about 6 p.m., said David Castelveter, a spokesman for US Airways. Castleveter said Flight 841 had just taken off for Pittsburgh when the flight attendant smelled smoke and notified the pilot, who decided to turn around and land.
The passengers were put on other flights, and the plane was being examined by mechanics.
