Desert Island Discs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Sort of carrying on from the `holidays` thread, and continuing along the `getting to know your fellow bbsers` theme, I have a question. You are a castaway on a desert island, but you have a cd player (solar powered) and ten cds - if you could choose, what would they be? Doesn`t matter if you can`t think of ten, I`m just interested to know what your music tastes are. (:o)

Why are the new line characters being eaten ?

That list I put in had each on a separate line, not in the posting but.

Anybody know why ?

-- Anonymous, April 05, 2000

You have to use html tags, Bill. You will need to type in:
a less than sign, the letters "br" (begin row?) and then a greater than sign.
You can't type those characters out in sequence to show someone as it simply tells the bbs to display your message with a carriage- return at that point.

If you want to start a new paragraph, then surround a letter "p" with the less than and greater than signs.

Since I can never come up with a definitive list, the first 10 I can think of right now would be:

U2 - Greatest Hits(the first release with the b side cd..hey it's in one package so it counts as one)

The Who - Hooligans (not sure if this is on cd, I've got the tape and will just have to burn it on cd if I'm going to be stranded)

Billy Joel - Greatest Hits vol 1

Luka Bloom - Salty Heaven

The Beatles - Greatest Hits (red album)

Queen - Greatest Hits(the one with Don't Stop Me Now)

Abba - Gold

Barnum - Original Broadway Cast Recording

Meatloaf - Bat Out of Hell

Some really interesting replies so far - some of them reminded me of other albums I would like to take. However, I already did my list last night, so I will stick to it:

No particular order:

A good recording of The Messiah - I could sing my heart out, and nobody would care about the fact that I have a God awful voice!

Tosca - has a bit of everything.

Prodigy - Fat of the Land - superb for using up excess energy.

Rage Against the Machine - first album - wonderful for getting rid of pent up anger.

Jnr. Walker`s Greatest Hits

Smokey Robinson`s Greatest Hits

Bob Marley - Legend - so appropriate for a desert island.

Jimi Hendrix - Are you experienced - I never tire of it.

John Rutter`s arrangment of hymns for children - sentimental reasons.

Any Offspring albumn - probably Smash - just for the pure fun of it!

-- Anonymous, April 05, 2000

Crikey - that's a hard choice Roz. So many to choose from and so few brain cells to call upon.

For what its worth, here's my top 10 tracks - not necessarily albums.

1. Floyd - Comfortably Numb No explanation needed - too many beers over too many years 2. Eagles - Hotel California "You can checkout any time you like but you can never leave" 3. Queen - We are the Champions One of these days 4. Floyd - One of these days See 3 above 5. Stones - This could be the last time Too numerous to mention, but Barbara, Mary and Sue come to mind 6. Zeppelin - Stairway 'cos I'm listening to it right now as an MPEG (like many nights away from home) - but it's also a classic 7. Beatles - Twist and Shout The start of the slippery slope - thanks fellas. (Alternatively, Love me do & Love me do) 8. Van the Man - Anything Pure class 9. Celine Dion - Just Walk Away 'cos it hurts 10. Clapton - Layla For that night in '81 (or was it '82?) 10a Harry Nillson - Without You For XXXX circa 1970

With many appologies to Roger Waters and the rest of the Floyd Boys for omitting the rest of your catalogue, Mick and the Gang, Messrs Burden & Price for "Rising Sun", Roger Chapman & Family for "that Coke bottle" at UMIST, The Who with "Magic Bus" and Deep Purple for "In Black". There's only so many you can fit in your top ten. Can we do this every week?

-- Anonymous, April 05, 2000

Hmm - maybe I was a bit too bold with m selection.

-- Anonymous, April 05, 2000

Ye gods you lot !!! All I can say is that I'm glad I share an exquisite taste in football teams with you and not a desert island, else there'd be some serious Lord of the Flies sh#t going down. ;0)))

Great thread Roz. You certainly win my Eclectic Taste award thus far ! I'd post my list, but it seems I'd only draw blank stares from yous all ......

Seeing as there`s a bit of a music `discussion` going on, I thought I`d revive this thread. Anyone feel like adding their choices?(:o)

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Oh, go on then. No particular order:

Acen - Trip to the Moon (parts 1 + 2)

My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything

Pil - Metal Box

Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Prescription

Kraftwerk - Autobahn

Dillinja - The Angels Fell

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

The Aphex Twin would get my vote from your list Stevo.(:o)

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Galaxy you're a self-confessed Radio 4 nut so why not stick to the rules and make it eight records, (plus a book and a luxury)? And BTW, where can I get one of these solar powered CD players? :-)

Mine are as follows :-

Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits
Secret Story - Pat Metheney
The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter - Incredible String Band
Pet Sounds - Beach Boys
Eric Clapton's Greatest Hits
Are You Experienced? - Jimi Hendrix
Sergeant Pepper - Beatles
Court and Spark - Joni Mitchell
Leonard Cohen's Greatest Hits
The Way it is - Bruce Hornsby and The Range
My People were fair and had sky in their hair but now they're content to wear stars on their brows / Prophets Seers and Sages - the angels of the ages - Tyrannosaurus Rex
Big River - Jimmy Nail

What do you mean that's 12? - I haven't got any Cat Stevens yet - and I want some comedy as well, Derek & Clive Live, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Hancock - oh I'm not playing then. Book : Catch 22 Luxury : Internet Access (on a solar powered laptop with wireless connection) I promise I won't attempt to contact anyone re a rescue. (Shouldn't be too outlandish a request - John Major was allowed to take Lords Cricket ground.)

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Never did agree with that Lords Cricket Ground decision...pah! (;o)

OK getting into the spirit of the thing.....I`m assuming that they wouldn`t throw in a tuner with the cd player? I would miss my Radio 4 something chronic! Book would have to be some huge tomb on 20th century history, and luxury would be endless supplies of Maxwell House instant coffee and ciggies........ah bliss!!!(:o)

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Hate to be pedantic but wasn't it The Oval? Major being a big Surrey fan and current president etc. I'd take a satellite telephone myself.

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

I'm amused that my selection from a year ago seems so diferent from now. "All time" for 18 months

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

I expect you`re right Stevo......cricket is not something I`d miss much on my island paradise!(:o)

I agree Macbeth.....I`m not sure I`d change mine, but there are loads more I would add.(:o)

Stone Roses - Stones Roses
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland (better than Are You...)
Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing
