I am thinking of buying a tape drive soon for archiving. But I want to know is it possible to capture to VCD compliant MPEG-1 audio/video straight to a tape drive?

What do you mean exactly by tape drive ? If it is a sreamer, a Mpeg file is a normal data file. If it is a VCR, you must have a video card with TV output, you plug your VCR on the TV output of the video card and you record.
