Source: AAP | Published: Monday April 3, 7:51 PM

A 66-year-old man died in hospital tonight from injuries he received in a light aircraft crash near Shepparton, in northern Victoria, earlier today.

Two other people who were in the aircraft, a man and a woman in their 70s, are in hospital in a critical condition, police said.

The 66-year-old, from the Melbourne suburb of Mentone, died in the Goulburn Valley Base Hospital shortly before he could be transferred to the Alfred Hospital Trauma Centre in Melbourne.

A Cessna 172 single-engine aircraft, flying from the township of Garfield, near Drouin, in the state's south-east, crash-landed at Shepparton Airfield about 12.20pm.

A 75-year-old Garfield man is in a serious but stable condition in the Alfred Hospital Trauma Centre and was undergoing surgery this evening.

A 74-year-old woman from Garfield is in a serious but stable condition in intensive care in the Goulburn Valley Base Hospital.

Police are unsure who was piloting the aircraft.

Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigators travelled from Canberra to the crash site this afternoon and will begin work tomorrow to find out the cause of the crash.
