NIKON: Panoramic on 990?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Aloha! I am VERY impressed with the photos I have seen taken from the 990! I was ready to get a Casio QV-3000Plus, but will probably hold out for the 990 instead. The res, the saturation and the Macro are most impressive! One feature that I really liked about the Casio was the ability to do multishot panoramics. Does the 990 have this ability either in camera or with software?

Also, what is the MINIMUM zoom lengths that can be used with the 2X and 3X tele-adapters? Basically, I am wondering if one can just purchase the 3X and still cover most everything from 150mm to 315mm or does the size of it only make it usable at the far zoom end?

Thank you! Rick

Your ability to create multishot panorama's is not a limitation of the camera. You can find many software solutions to produce "spliced" panoramas from shots taken by hand. (That is not tripod mounted) Of course you probably want to create perfectly seamless panorama's, and to do this you will need a tripod mount. The Camera's that have this capability are those with the tripod mount located directly below the lens of the camera, unfortunately, the Nikon 990 is not one of these cameras since the camera lens is located on the left most side of the camera when viewed from behind. (The mount is located to the right) Regardless, it should be easy to create a tripod mount attachment that modifies the center of rotation of the mounted Nikon so that its lens is above the tripod center of rotation. ( It should be easy enough to have on of the right dimensions custom machined.) Assuming someone hasn't already done it. That's pretty much it, I hope I've answered your questions, good luck in your purchasing decision.
