Free Canning Jars

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Does anyone want free canning jars? Around here I can't give them away, no one cans anymore. I still do but our family has downsized, Lol! They're regular mouth quarts & pints, NOT mayonnaise jars. I will send as many as I can spare if you'll prepay the postage. If anyone is interested let me know & I will package both sizes, get them weighed & let you know what the cost would be. Also I live in Illinois about 45 minutes from St. Louis, Mo. if anyone living nearby would want to pick them up. Jane

Jane;

My wife is "very" interested in your generous offer. We live South of St.Louis, so maybe we could take a road trip and pick them up. Please e-mail if you want to work something out.

Thanks

Jim

Interested here, depending on the cost of shipping. We lucked out last year and my husband just happened to be at the dump at the same time a lady was getting rid of two boxes of immaculately clean jars. He was happy to take them off her hands! But as our family is on the grow, we can use more all the time! I especially need pint jars. So send me an e-mail and let me know. Thanks, Jane.

Last spring I put an ad in the paper requesting free or cheap canning jars. I got so many calls that I couldn't hardly answer them all. For about $60 I got well over 1000 jars! Wide mouth quarts mostly and lots of pints, too. I also got a free pressure canner (had it tested and it's just fine). Some mayonnaise jars, too, but I can use them for fruit. Also tons of rings and even some new lids. So many people don't do this anymore and they are thrilled to find someone who does. An added benefit was I got to meet some really interesting former canners!

Anyway, when I eventually get to where I am not using them, I will pass them along to someone else. What goes around, comes around as they say. Ads in the paper could work both ways....getting rid of and accumulating. Just sort of a related comment....

Thank you everyone for your quick replies! Jim & Kelly Tanner live nearby so they are going to pick up as many jars as they want. IF there are any left I will mail them to the first people who replied. Jane

Just a thought on free jars. Many older women near me are no longer able to can. They have no help because children have moved away or aren't interested. A lot of them have jars in the basement. Some people here even PAY for their beans, and then PAY women so much a jar for canning them. I have gotten many jars from my husband's grandmother. In return I always make sure she has enough canned foods to serve to her visiting family during the holidays and enough to eat for herself during the year. She really appreciates it and I also get a sense of reward from this. (After all she's the one who taught me how to do it!) There may be someone near you just like this who would love some help. Good luck to all. Jennifer

I AM interested in canning jars, but what I am trying to find and have had no success at are plain, undecorated 1/2 and 1 pint jars. Anyone have any idea who might manufacture such?

I, too have been looking for the plain 1/2 pint canning jars. Look everywhere but have not found any yet. If I do I will let you know. Maybe oldfashioned hardware stores will have them.

There is a place in Arlington Hts, IL that sells canning jars wholesale if you need lrg. quantity. I have their name and # if you are interested.

Do you have any 1/2 pint (8 oz) or 6 oz mouth jars? Need probably 800 or so. If not, is there a good place out there to get these jars wholesale? need for jams/jelies. Any response appreciated.
