Point Comfort, TX: Fire Strikes High-density Polyethylene Unit at Plastics Plant on Gulf Coast--Downwind residents told to seal themselves indoorsPoint Comfort, TX, United States 3/31/2000
Fire struck the high-density polyethylene unit at Formosa Plastics in the predawn hours today (3/31/2000).
Plant officials say two people suffered minor injuries, but they wouldn't identify them or say if they were plant employees or firefighters, according to KXAS-TV in Dallas-Ft.Worth.
The cause of the fire is not known. Residents downwind of the plant were told to seal themselves indoors for the two hours that it took to control the fire.
In December 1998 a chemical tank explosion injured 42 workers there.
