LACONIA - As many as 30 gallons of what is believed to be hydraulic oil spilled slowly into the Winnipesaukee River over the past few days, creating a long slick on the river discovered by firefighters during training exercises this week.

Rick Berry of the state Department of Environmental Services said the oil had spilled on Water Street and had been swept through storm drains by Wednesday's rains to a catch basin near the river.

He described the spill as relatively minor. "The unfortunate part is that the oil got to the open water," Berry said. "But they've got a pretty good handle on the clean-up. It's pretty much under control."

Emergency workers used floating barriers and absorbent pads to sop up the oil on the river yesterday and cleaned the oil from the catch basin and the street.

Firefighters were performing training exercises on the river Wednesday when they first noticed the slick, Berry said. When they noticed it again yesterday and traced the slick to the catch basin, they called on state environmental officials to help clean up.

The police and fire departments will open a joint investigation today to try to determine the cause of the spill, Berry said.
