Tamron 28-105 f2.8 for Nikon

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread

Am contemplating purchase of the Tamron 28-105 f2.8 for use as an all around lens with an eye to shooting basketball. Does anyone have any experience with this lens? Looks like a real value if the optics are good.

The search for an alternative to the Nikkor 35-70 f/2.8 or the new 28-70 F/2.8 goes on.

I think the currently favored alternatives are the Tokina 28-70 f/2.6-2.8 or the Sigma 28-70 f/2.8.

Tokina has a new version of its lens coming out about now, with a 28-80 range at f/2.8. That's the one I'm waiting for.

So, i guess to answer your question directly, the Tokina or Sigma alternatives to the Nikkor seems preferred right now to the Tamron.

But the Tamron 90 mm macro lens is a winner.

The Tamron 28-105 is a massive lens that uses the ever plentiful and cheap 82mm filters. It is by no means conventient as an all round lens. In fact it is a good deal bigger and heavier than the Nikon's own 28-70f/2.8, which is not a feather weight by any stretch of imagination. Also, you probably need a good deal more than 105mm on the long end for shooting basketball games.
