the theme of black cat (as far as i know) would be guilt and perverseness. perverseness, he believes, is "one of the primitive impulsess of the human heart," and provides the rationale for his unjustifiable acts like killing Pluto or hitting the wall of his wife's 'grave' with his cane. (perverseness could even be his own conscience) i don't know if that helps at all.....

The main themes of "The Black Cat" are Perverseness, Retribution, Superstition and men's tendency to do wrong for the wrong's sake! The gap between good and evil is not so deep in the perverse's mind.
