Tourney 4 - Length of Tournament vote

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

Yeah... another day... another vote - I still have that "tournament mode" vote still forthcoming - but I still have to wait for other votes to wrap up...

OK - I'm looking at these scenarios right now...

1. 2 month wait - 2 month tournament - 8 games(Apr, May Wait, Jun - Jul play)

2. 2 month wait(would be 1 on a regular basis) - 3 month tournament - 10 games.(Apr, May wait, Jun - Aug play)

The reason for the 2 month wait would be to stay in sync with the calender(Jan - Apr, May - Aug, Sep - Dec)

I like # 2 better - cause it seems we're starting to have people to not know the games better than they want... but I'll leave that opinion to the players :)

Of course, you may write in a response - just worry about the wait time, the play time, and the # of games to play for now - we'll worry about type of game when it comes to debate on the 11th of april.(unless we have a 2 month wait - then I'll probably extend that deadline)

As the promoter of the "2 months wait" option, I surely vote fot it !
As for the number of games, 8 (one for each category: platform, maze, shooter, fighter, puzzle, sport, drive and miscellaneous, but we'll discuss about this later) is a reasonable number to me.
As for the lenght, I believe the longer they are, the best is for competition. So far, keeping 2 months lenght with 8 games is a good compromise, but a longer period (i.e. 3 months) will be ok to me too. Cicca

My vote goes to #1 which seems a good compromise.

A length of 3 months is too much. You have already several players who just play around 1 month, not more. And the couple ( 2 month wait - 3 months length ) would not stay in sync with the calendar ! But the ( 2 - 2 ) choice keeps that and would give tournaments on June, October, February.

8 games seems to currently be the good number.

So let's go for the ( 2 - 2 - 8 ) system !

My vote is 2-2-8. Two months wait, 2 month tourney, 8 games only! The three two-month tourneys would run Feb-Mar, Jun-Jul, Oct-Nov. As a bonus this will accomodate everyone very nicely!! We can then have a FULL MONTH FOR VOTING without rushing into the next tournament. More importantly, people can enjoy the holidays in December, college students can study for finals in May! People like myself "in the real world" can take time off early or late summmer, and the europeans will have their month long August holiday!

I still feel that 2 months is too long for a tournament. I would much prefer a one month tournament, then a one month break. For a one month tournament, about 5 or 6 games should be plenty. But if we must stick with two months (no more, please!) then 8 games is fine.

Me vote 1-3-10, 1 month wait, 3 month tournament, 10 games. Actually i don't care about the number of games 8 would be reasonable. you shouldn't need to wait two months, you might as well have one more month to play and keep in the same 4 tournaments/seasons a year deal.

Well, I would prefer 1 month wait - 2 month tournament - 8 games.

So should we have all proposals available before a vote is called?

There's no way on this earth I'm going to play the same damned games for 3 months - yawn.....

1 month wait, 3 month play - I haven't had enough time in this tournament to get "deep" enough into some games I'd wanted to in the beginning, still wanting to break that 500K on Gauntlet2..., get a decent score on ladybug and amidar etc. 8 games, 10 is too much.

I agree with Tommy: we need more time to play: this is the real sense of my previous message ("Tourney 4: new ideas"). Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear enough, but I always forget that you're not in my mind and don't know what I'm thinking first... I proposed 4-6 games in a 1 month tournament because I think it's not possible to get "deep" in ten games at the same time... maybe when I was younger, and I played 4-10 hours a day... So, after I read your answer, I think THE MOST IMPORTANT THING is TO KNOW THE NAMES of the games!!! Infact if we know them some months first, we have all the time to learn them.

An example:

Apr: vote for t4, vote for t5

May: t4, vote for t6

Jun: nothing

Jul: t5, vote for t7 an so on...

so we have two months to learn t5 games, 3 months for t6, t7, t8...

The second reason to prefer less games: with 10 games I have this situation:

GAMES T2 T3

I like 3 3

I can play 4 3

I hate 3 4

Why do we have to play FOUR games we hate?

On the contrary, if the games are only 4-6, probably we'll hate only 1-2, and this is a reasonable pain: we have 3+1 months to learn them!

So, I'd prefer 6 one month tournament, each of 5 games, but... first of all: PLEASE, COULD WE VOTE FIRST?!

Last thing: I proposed another leaderboard to reward high scores (Tommi 3 first place!) because so I think that Tommi didn't stop at his first attempt on Tron! And if there is a percentage, or something similar, it should be the same thing for the second place, and so on... (for example: with T3 rules, why did Phil have to play to Ladybug, since he was virtually first, even if he was third with about 45%? There were other NINE games to play!)

Maybe the best thing should be to find a strange mechanism that links simple points like in T3 with percentage... and then prove it on the previous 3 tournaments to see if it works well!

Well, now it's time I vote: I prefer #1, of course; and I hope we could vote first...

Regards to all

My vote is 2-2-8 (1 month is too short and 10 games is too much to explore games properly)
