taking alot of pix w/o download-what cameras make sense

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Need to travel and take many pix (~300) with no opportunity to download or edit until I return. What cameras/technologies are cost effective for this purpose e.g I don't want to buy 25 memory cards for a new camera? Am i left with only Mavica's as an option? Are they really any good?

Memory "cards" (SM) (CF) are available with much more capacity (64 mb +) than floppies. A 16 MB (LOW END) will hold how many photos as a 1.44 MB floppie Mavica uses?....and much smaller, you can "stuff" many more of the "cards" in a lot less space in your pocket than 1 floppie!!

1 answer: If your trip is not for a couple of months, and you want a Mavica, Sony is coming out with new floppy drive cameras that can use floppy adapters for their memory sticks(up to 64mb)

2nd Answer The Digital Wallet an obscure device that holds a large number of pictures. The latest version is essentially an 8gig harddrive that you transfer the files to from your memory card. Here is the website where it can be found at. http://209.238.223.132/

There is no free lunch and no free memory. You will need to either carry enough cards for 300 pictures at your desired resolution/compression or you will need to download. Of course, even with a film camera, 300 pictures would mean carrying and changing film rolls. With digital you have the added "benefit" of managing memory and battery resources as well.

(Whether to a "wallet" or a "laptop" or what ever, it's still a download or you can't use the card over.) Mavica and floppies are just another in camera memory alternative (to cards, sticks, etc.) that you will still need to "download" at some point. Or you'll need to carry 300 pictures worth of floppies. It's just that most non- Mavicas (&floppies) have a potential for larger file sizes.

Aloha! I can't believe that nobody has mentioned the Casio QV-3000Plus yet!!! It seems to me that would be perfect for you! It has a WHOPPING 340mb IBM MicroDrive in it that will hold OVER 300 3-megapixel images! The camera sells for $999. It would cost you nearly that much just for 390mb of CompactFlash memory!

The MicroDrive is as fast or FASTER than the flashcards also! Much unlike the SLOW SLOW SLOW Mavicas or SuperDisk cameras.

I still like the looks of the Nikon 990 better, but if storage is key, get the Casio! Just MHO of course :-)
