Title: Plane Makes Emergency Landing

Story Filed: Sunday, March 26, 2000 10:22 AM EST

BASEL, Switzerland (AP) -- A plane with 150 passengers bound from Cairo to the northern Swiss city of Basel had to make an emergency landing in Crete after a cargo door came open shortly after takeoff, the airline said Sunday.

A statement from the Swiss regional airline Crossair said the MD83 airliner was unable to gain altitude after losing cabin pressure. The pilot maintained the plane at low altitude until landing at Heraklion airport on the Greek island of Crete, it said.

There were no reports of injuries and passengers arrived Sunday afternoon on a replacement plane in the northern Swiss city of Basel. The outer skin of the plane was damaged by a cargo net which came lose, the statement said.

Crossair said there was no immediate explanation for the door coming open.

A Crossair Saab 340 plane crashed into a field shortly after takeoff in January, killing all 10 people on board. Investigations into that crash are continuing.
