AN area of beach off Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland, was sealed off from the public today after suspected dangerous chemicals were discovered.

An official from the Environment Agency was due to visit the beach to take samples to determine what the substance was.

Coastguards were alerted by local firefighters after an orange substance was seen on the beach near the car park.

A Coastguard spokesman said: "There is no indication how it appeared. An environmental chemist is going out to check exactly what it is."
