CHICAGO -- The Chicago Transit Authority returned three hydrogen-powered buses to Canada's Ballard Power Systems yesterday after a successful two-year experiment to test the pollution-free vehicles.

While the city said it has no plans to buy the buses, transit authority president Frank Kruesi said "this very successful program proves hydrogen fuel cells can power transit buses in the daily grind of revenue service."

The buses, made by Vancouver-based Ballard, are equipped with fuel cells that make electricity by mixing hydrogen and oxygen and release an exhaust that consists simply of water.
