dog ear infection

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have a 10 month old English Springer spaniel puppy, who has a stinky ear infection. I've had springer spaniels for most of my life and have had ear infection problems. My problem is that I can't afford to take him to the vet for about three weeks, and I would like to ease the itch, pain, smell with an alternative method. I've tried garlic juice, mixed with acidophilous, and water, which I found off the web. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas until I can get him to the vet? ,

Hi there, why don't you try camphor pheniaue! Good for ear mites and infections. I would put in half a teas. and rub the dogs ear at the base to make sure the stuff gets around in there good.

This is what I use on my three bassett hounds to control ear problems. Mix equal parts of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar. Put a few drops in the ear three to four times a day.

Also works on people too,(swimmer's ear).

Will your vet let you make payments ?Have you tried calling to see if you can just get the antibiotics? Do you have any people antibiotics left over ?And last ? do you have a livestock vet ?Livestock vets seem to be better at giving you antibiotics without a visit. The other option is your feed store ,buy a bottle of penicillion and give him a shot .If you need exact amounts and how e-mail me .For prevention you need to get all that hair out of the air canal .Get a pair of forceps, clamp on the hair"sm. amount "and pull.On the underside of the ear flap take an electric razor and shave it .Then get ear drying drops and use these 2 times a week .Make sure to keep them clean. If you do this you should greatly cut down on infections .We do it with are Goldens.

We have a black lab who needs her ears cleaned out on a regular basis. I use opti wash.. can get it from any pet supply catalog. But first you want to clear up the infection... that can be nasty. After you get that treated just clip as patty mentioned and clean ears a few times a week. The reason your dog gets this is because of long ears, thats what our vet told me. Good luck.

Thank you all for your responses! I will try anything at this point to help him. I do have a bottle of penicillin that I used for my goats, but I will use that as a last resort. I would like to use a topical solution for starters, and see where it goes from there> Thanks again!! Cara Lewis cnllewis@email.com

Our ol'lady lab has (and has had) the same smelly, nasty , black-gunk producing ear infection. The vet here tried a myriad of topical and pill-type remedies. Nothing was seeming to work. At this last visit, he gave my husband the latest bottle of meds (tresiderm -sp???). We also started her on 1/4 cup of yogurt mixed in with her food. He cleans out her ears frequently, and he says there is some improvement. I think it's the yogurt. She gets some about every other day. Good luck and keep trying - something's bound to work.

Cara, What we used to use in the good old days for rabbit mites, was to clean out the ears and put vegetable oil in the ear. This has to be done every day for about a week. You can buy ear mite medicine at farm supply stores now, but the oil worked pretty good. If it is an infection, well that antibiotic will work, I like the subq. cause it is easier to give. Oh subcutaneous, means it is given under the skin, not in the muscle. If you have ever given a cat a shot you will really appreciate the subq. injection. Good luck with your dog, I know how expensive those vet bills can be. karen
