"gas-out" arguments/opinions

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

I would appreciate a re-post of the articles/opinions explaining why a "gas-out" probably would have little or no effect on OPEC and the distribution chain.. I've received several emails from friends encouraging participation. I know I've read several different versions or similar ones on different forums...Thanks

Its simple.

The only way a "gas out" works and lowers prices is for EVERYONE to stop driving.

Always.

Everyone walks and takes bikes or buses just like you see in China.

ALWAYS. No mas auto. No mas SUVs. No mas trucks.

Hoof it.

No gas used, down come the prices.

A day or two to "show them we mean it" matters not one bit. People will simply fill up before or after (or during the gas out if they need it).

Got fuel? Sooner or later you will have to replace what you have.

I must agree with cpr on this one. A brief boycott of a day or two may assuage your feelings, but won't have any effect on the price of gas.

At most it might induce the oil companies to shave their margins slightly and lower the price by a penny or two, because they view it as good public relations. After a week or two, once the publicity wore off, it would be business as usual.

We still have the lowest fuel prices in the world, here in America. How would you like to pay Australian or Irish prices for fuel. People are whining about $2.00/ gal... how about $2.00 a liter???

scratchin' an itch...

If people know there is going to be a gas out they'll just top their tanks off beforehand, and fill them up again a couple days later when it's over. They'll still buy the same amount of gas, because they're lazy. The only way to send a message that gets a response is to completely boycott gasoline for at least 2 weeks. People would have to get off their butts and carpool, take a bus, ride a bike. They just don't care enough to do that.
