An elderly Arlington Heights woman died after being hit by a train in Des Plaines Monday.

The 87-year-old woman was walking southbound on the sidewalk across the Metra train tracks at River Road when she was struck by a westbound Metra train at approximately 12:05 p.m., according to Sgt. Kevin O'Connell of the Des Plaines police.

The train involved was number 615, which left Chicago at 11:30 a.m., Metra spokesperson Tom Miller said. The train was delayed for 50 minutes and no other trains were affected, Miller said.

Because the accident occurred on tracks owned by Union Pacific, Metra was not involved in the investigation Monday. More details were not available, and Des Plaines police said the incident remains under investigation.
