From Saturday's Evening Chronicle:

Fan's Euro hope still very alive Alan Oliver AREN'T Newcastle United supporters wonderful? And so optimistic.

Take United fan John Hall - no, not the Sir John - from Gosforth. This particular John's main aim in life is to see Newcastle United playing in Europe every season.

And he took umbrage at me for suggesting United's only route into Europe next season would be to win the FA Cup.

Obviously I realise that finishing among the big boys in the Premiership could see United having another trip or two across the channel.

But quite frankly I gave up on this after United's defeat at Wimbledon in January.

However, John hasn't given up and he hopes United haven't either.

And he insists that United could finish eighth in the Premiership and still end up in Europe if they don't win the FA Cup, in this little scenario:

1 Man Utd (enter Champions' League).

2 Leeds (enter Champions' League)

3 Liverpool (enter Champions' League)

4 Chelsea (Win Champions' League and qualify as holders)

5 Arsenal (Win UEFA Cup and qualify as holders)

6 Aston Villa (Win FA Cup and qualify for the UEFA Cup)

7 Leicester City (Won the Worthington Cup and have already qualified for UEFA Cup).

8 Newcastle (Qualify for UEFA Cup on League position).

John admits that this a bit of a "long shot".

You can say that again, John, but thanks for enlightening us.

Maybe doesn't answer your question but a bit of a laugh anyway. How dare a Newcastle fan suggest we won't win the FA Cup????? If his calculation is correct it suggests there's only 1 Uefa Cup place available for league position. This surely isn't right is it?

I think 9th placed would qualify in that scenario too, because the holders (Arsenal in this scenario) surely don't count in the numbers allowed entry - ie FA Cup winners, Worthless winners, and two from league placings.

Regardless I can see ourselves at best as high as sixth, with ManU, Leeds, Arsenal and Chelsea above us. They are out of range, but sixth place is definitely in our scope, with Aston Villa and Spurs our main rivals. Our goal difference over the others is crucial.

dunno how many league places for UEFA but there is no reason why we cant make a damn good attempt at 6th place.

Of course looking at our position when guillit left and the time it takes for YBR to turn the team around it seems OTT to expect 6th. With our squad and with the number of games left we SHOULD finish 6th.

-- Anonymous, March 20, 2000

Looking at the games we have left, I would say that pessimistically we could pick up 12 points, optimistically nearer 20. So average that out at 16, that's 56 points which was good enough for 6th last season.

OK my predictions as follows (changed since communicata but not much)

Makem B@st@rds March 25 Everton (H) D April 1 Southampton (A) L 8 Wimbledon (H) D 15 Man Utd (A) L 22 Sheff Wed (A) W 24 Bradford (H) W 29 Aston Villa (A) L May 6 West Ham (H) W 14 Tottenham (A) L

Smoggies

March 25 Sheff Wed (H) W April 3 Tottenham (A) L 10 Man Utd (H) L 15 Coventry (A)L 22 Chelsea (A) L 29 West Ham (A)L May 2 Newcastle (H)L 6 Watford (H) W 14 Everton (A) L

Toon

March 25 Liverpool (A) D April 1 Bradford (H) W 8 West Ham (A) D 9 Chelsea Cup - Win of course! 15 Leicester (H) W 22 Leeds (H) D 29 Coventry (H) W May 2 Middlesbrough (A) W 6 Derby (A) W 14 Arsenal (H) W

Lets see that's 11 more points for the Makems giving 'em 53 (Generous I know!)

6 more for the Smoggies giving them 43

24 more for the Toon giving us 64

OK a bit optimistic but you never know.

Note fixture date change for us v smoggies and the Leeds date will almost certainly be moved (Official Sh@te).

So I'll say

Toon 6th 64 (previous prediction was a more realistic 59) Makems 9th 53 (previous prediction was 49 I think) Smoggies 15th 43 (previous about the same)

Who's next?

This probably won't come out well on the screen, but here is my "Robson era" league table, showing we're 6th and well ahead of the teams between us and sixth in the real table. In fact we're doing better than Chelsea in points per game, so you could say we're 5th on form. So I am confident we can get to the real 6th by season end, if we keep going. At the same points per game for the remaining 15 games, we could get up to 64 points, although obviously we've got 3 hard games. Team Played GoalDiff Pts 1 Leeds U 23 15 50 2 Man U 23 18 48 3 Liverpool 24 17 44 4 Arsenal 23 18 41 5 Chelsea 25 8 41 6 Newcastle Utd 23 17 39 7 Everton 24 6 35 8 Sunderland 23 4 34 9 Tottenham 24 8 33 10 West Ham 25 -5 32 11 Coventry 24 4 31 12 Aston Villa 24 1 30 13 Leicester 22 -4 28 14 Middlesbrough 23 -8 28 15 Wimbledon 23 -9 27 16 Southampton 24 -15 24 17 Bradford 24 -16 22 18 Derby 23 -9 21 19 Sheff Wed 23 -19 20 20 Watford 23 -31 12

AAARGH. I thought it might not come out too well, but I didn't think it would look that bad! I cut and pasted from Excel which is obviously a big mistake. To make it slightly less unintelligible, you should note that the number before the team name is their position.

Thanks for that Barry. I've sorted it out in Word and it's very useful - and satisfying! I'm surprised the Makems have got as many points, considering their 2000 form. They were 18 points clear of us at Christmas.

Are you new to the BBS? I don't remember seeing your name before. If you are, then welcome, if not then my apologies for not noticing you before.

Just one point Barry, There are only 9 games left - you've added the 6 pre-Robson games. :-))

At 1.7 points per game we'd get another 15 or 16 points giving us 55. Better to look at the last 6 games, which have got us 13 points or 2.17 points per game. That would get us another 19 or 20 points so at the end of the season we'll be on 59 or 60 points. I'm just being blindly optimistic in thinking we'll actually get another 24! :o)))

Optimists - Pilgrim, Barry and me. But also LKD, who was interviewed on Sly Sports today and reckoned that 6th was a definite possibility. Also said that there were places to play for in the semi, so everybody's up for it and playing for their place. Which means.............

........we could have the following line up at Wembley on April 9th

Perez Griffin Charvet Marcelino Serrant Maric McClen Fumaca Glass Ketsbaia Robinson

Hopefully, they'll be lined up in the bar and not on the pitch!

Oh look I'm back.

Yes I spent a little while yesterday doing the exact same thing, trying to work out the likely league positions at the end of the season for the Toon and top 12 teams.

I ended up with the conclusion that we will finish 7th behind Tottenham. I wish I brought all my little scribblings with me, but out of the teams between us and sixth place, we have have the second "easiest" run in, with Tottenham having possibly a run in on par with ours or easier.

Like I said on the old BBS, the top five teams are starting to establish themselves as the EPL elite, with financial power now more reponsible for your league position than the development of top bairns to establish a good team. I have also said, that if we can not make the leap next year to join these "elite" teams, then we will likely be consigned to the next level of teams from 6th place through to 12th.

I believe that out of the second tier clubs, either NUFC, Tottenham, or Aston Villa have the best chance to make the leap, with NUFC in the best poition re: club situation. We just need the onfield performances to match.

Just goes to show how good an away win it was against Everton. Same against Liverpool and we'll defintely be in the frame for finishing 6th. Tall order though.

How do you put a league table like that in a message? Are there some instructions somewhere?

-- Anonymous, March 21, 2000

Barry, there's a HTML command called TABLE. It's fairly complicated to use but if you have Netscape it will have a page composer component that makes tables a bit easier. It also has a good help section on HTML and allows you to preview it.

A good site to learn HTML and try it out is

Siterite

If I've done my HTML right the link will work.

Good Luck

Scratchy's little table proves my point (to some extent) about the development of a supper six within the EPL, as there is a noticable gap between sixth spot and seventh spot. I don't believe the gap between the top two and the next four will be reflected in next years season. However I fully expect Leeds (depending on how they recover from the GBH boys case) and Manure to dominate the league, with Arse, Pool and NUFC battling it out for third spot and Chelsea to keep up with their foreign legion retirement policy.
