NIKON: Knowledge Suggestion

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

This is not a question, but a suggestion for Nikon.

I think that you should post someplace (perhaps the Nikontech Web site) some views of the CoolPix with the covers removed. An exploded view drawing of the internal components would also be lovely, along with some specifications that are prepared by the engineering department, not marketing.

I am totally taken by the 950 (and have ordered the 990) but I would like to know more about what is inside. Even answering simple questions, like how big is the CCD, took a lot of searching and mathematical calculations on my part. Once I learned how small it was, I was in total awe of what your engineers were able to do. I also stopped complaining so much about things like barrel distortion, limited f/stop range, lack of resolution at infinity, etc.

Of course, like the computer hardware manufacturers, you'd have to post large notices that any disassembly of the CoolPix voids warranty, etc.

Surely, the inner workings of the CoolPix are not unknown to your competitors, since all they have to do is acquire one and take it apart.

Thank you,

Well no one wants to give away trade secrets ;-)

We would not do it-we cannot post internal workings as some of it is proprietary (of course people already try to reverse engineer it). There are some good books on how the CCD actually works etc....

Prehaps someone will do an unauthorized expose of the Coolpix....

I agree Nikon should give us more spec on there digital cameras as can't fine out whats in the camera 990 kit like battery capacity of the NiMH etc, also Hints and Tips and shortcuts on using there digital cameras. Maybe I should buy the Olympus 3030 instead.
