March 19th CONCORDE'S ENGINE TROUBLE

Concorde passengers expecting to be flown to America found themselves in Ireland instead after the supersonic plane suffered engine problems.

While owners BA insist Concorde did not have to make an emergency landing they have admitted that there had been problems with the plane.

The New York bound flight landed safely at County Clare Airport in the Irish Republic.

A BA spokeswoman said: "Concorde did not make an emergency landing.

"The captain did shut down one of the engine's during the flight.

"As a result the aircraft was flying sub-sonic and used more fuel."

She added that none of the passengers had been in any danger and said: "Concorde is not being grounded, but it is standard in situations like this for checks to be made."

All those on board were offered accommodation overnight and were flown to Heathrow later on Saturday where another aircraft was waiting for them.
