dog sizes

I recently lost my beloved standard poodle Wizard. I am looking for another poodle but would like something a bit smaller. My father-in-law had what he called a "moyen" which was about 30 pounds and appeared to be somewhere in size between a standard and a minature. Is there such a thing? Do minatures get as big as 30 pounds? Thanks for any help.

Hi Darby, I'm sorry to read about your Wizard. How old was he and what happened to him? It's hard to loose these friends, isn't it? Poodles come in 3 sizes. Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Moyen is a European size of poodle between the standand and miniature. If Wizard was a male, a female standard would generally be smaller than he was. Sometimes, you can get an oversized miniature or a small standard, but this is not a size which breeders generally advertise. Your best bet would be to seek out breeders in your area and have a look at the sire and dam. That can sometimes tell what size their offspring would be. Maybe you would be interested in joining PSG, (poodle support group) and get to know some of the breeders there. You could ask many questions and find out what is available. Are you seeking a companion, show dog, or an agility prospect? I hope this helps!
