NIKON - New scanner soon ?????

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Mike - Without divulging any trade secrets - do you have any idea when (roughly) we can except a new Nikon Coolscan film scanner ??? The 2000 has been out there for 2 years now, so I'm hoping that you'll soon release something with a resolution higher than 2700 dpi. Thanks for answering all these questions !!!!!

AS of today and for the forseeable future the Coolscan line will remain as it stands. As reviews have shown-the color depth and accuracy of the 2700 dpi Coolscan products exceed some of the higher resolution scanners. If you want to become independent of resolution- use Altamira Group's Genuine Fractals software for scaling and compressing. We have made prints as large as 8 feet by 12 feet from a 35 mm scan on a Super Coolscan 2000.

A 400 horsepower engine in a VW Bug-while cool-is useless-in other words-the 150 HP Turbo engine is more than enough....

3 new Nikon film scanners seem to be due soon (1 or 2/2001): Coolscan IV-ED, Coolscan 4000-ED, and Coolscan 8000-ED. IV is update of LS-2000 w/ED optics, and Digital ICE-3 software, 4000 is 4000dpi and density range to 4.2, ED optics and ICE-3, and 8000 is same as 4000, but also accepts 120 film. Not much further info yet, but there is a page link to scanner home page at nikonusa site (don't have it at the moment). Seem very interesting, especially the 4.2 density. -JW 1/17/01
