Hackers hit state library Web site 03/17/2000 By Linda Franklin Associated Press Writer

Hackers struck the Oklahoma Department of Libraries Web site early Thursday, forcing the agency to take the site down for repairs.

Bill Young, public information officer, said the agency hoped to have the site restored by the weekend. He said he didn't expect it to cost a lot to restore the site.

The hackers changed the agency's home page, leaving a message that the site had been hacked, put in a black background, moved the state seal and left a tribute to other hackers and a message.

Young said the agency was double-checking the rest of the Web site and looking at security issues. The agency also planned to talk to a consultant to see if anything else is needed.

He said the attack raised concerns because Michael O'Hasson, the agency's Web development officer, has been diligent in security areas. O'Hasson keeps up with patches to take care of potential problems.

"There's so many people out there trying to find a window," Young said.

"It's a challenge. It's too bad they can't find other challenges or use their talents for greater good instead of just frustrating people," he said.
