Fuel Prices Up 20 Percent In Mozambique March 17, 2000

MAPUTO, Mozambique (PANA) - The Mozambican mineral resources and energy ministry has announced rises in the price of liquid fuels of up to 20 percent, with effect from Thursday.

The stiffest increases of 20 percent were for diesel and jet fuel.

A litre of diesel rose from 5,210 to 6,250 meticais (14,200 meticais = 1 US dollar).

The increase for jet fuel was from 3,844 to 4,612.90 meticais a litre.

Kerosene went up from 2,780 to 3,330 meticais a litre, representing a 19.8-percent increase.

The price of cooking gas rose by 15.5 percent, with a kilo of gas now selling at 8,268.30 meticais, instead of the previous 7,157.9 meticais.

The smallest increase was for petrol, which went up by 6.1 percent, from 7,580 to 8,040 meticais a litre.

The new prices are valid for the main ports and surrounding areas.

Inland distributors are allowed to add the cost of transport to the fixed prices.

Fuel prices are reviewed every month in Mozambique, in line with import prices changes.

The last fuel price increase was 15 February, and the authorities justified the new rises on the grounds of increased oil prices on the world market as well as the devaluation of the metical against the US dollar by about 3.5 percent.
