Nikon: PLEASE fix 950 firmware-wide angle at park!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I can't believe ANYONE would want their camera to start in "zoom" rather than "wide". How are you supposed to quickly frame a subject after turning the CP950 on? Have the camera default to wide, I'll zoom in as needed. Why not have the PC (or mac) software customizable so you can "load" different firmware options into the camera? Maybe I want 10 user profiles but don't want BSS. I could just load in the set of options that I desire. The software should be "smart" enough to know if a particular combination would't work or if too many options were selected (maxed out memory). Also, what's the deal with the flash? On-camera flash is less than acceptable. Off-camera flash is: 1)clumsy 2)uses fragile, proprietory, connections 3) connection is in a terrible location and cord is straight (hits everything, including the 900 bracket) 3)even after you go to the trouble of using the wacky bracket, dealing with the cord and connection and making an otherwise handy camera into a monstrosity, you get no more that psuedo-TTL control? If I have to go to all the trouble, at least let the camera take advantage of the focusing light cpability of the Nikon flash units (as well as most of the other wasted features)! Ah, just make the lens park at WIDE!!! hickster

Sorry this cannot happen. The firmware can only be programmed/reprogrammed a finite number of times. The risk of camera damage would be very high-corrupt code would render it useless.

I too would like that and that is what I use the 3 custom groups of settings for.

Regarding the zoom position-sorry but the 950 locks the lens at the end to protect it from impact damage. The 990 of newer design uses a different safety lock-and it cannot be retrofitted.

Sorry about the bracket-I have used with great success since the 900s. The focusing light technology is SLR lens specific and SLR design-it cannot be easily adapted.
