CONSUMERS ENERGY ASK CUSTOMERS TO USE 911 FOR EMERGENCIES

Story Filed: Thursday, March 16, 2000 11:28 AM EST

JACKSON, Mich., Mar 16, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Some Consumers Energy customers might have difficulty reaching the utility today because of widespread service interruptions from telephone service providers.

As a result, Consumers Energy is asking customers who need to report an emergency -- such as a gas leak or a downed power line -- to call 911 rather than the utility's published telephone numbers, until further notice.

The utility has made arrangements with 911 call centers to accept utility emergency calls only and pass them on to Consumers Energy.

Customers should use the 911 system to report electric and gas emergencies until normal telephone service has been restored.

Utility customers who have been unsuccessful in their attempts to contact Consumers today with non-emergency requests should call later when telephone service has been restored.

Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE: CMS), is Michigan's largest utility providing natural gas and electricity to more than six million of the state's nine and one-half million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
