Gas Costs Cut Peterbilt Production

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Peterbilt Motors Co. is reducing daily production to 50 trucks a day from 70 and may lay off workers because of rising gas prices.

High gas prices mean profits are down for trucking companies, which in turn hurts Peterbilt's truck sales.

The company, which builds 10 percent of the nation's semi-trailer tractors -about 25,000 trucks a year -said it is considering laying off some of its 1,700 workers.

Peterbilt said any layoffs should happen within the next couple of weeks. Its trucks cost between $90,000 and $125,000
