If I could buy one player for nufc

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

it would have to be Ryan Giggs.

He is phenomenol (sp?). Last night he was just excellent. It has occurred to me that his form has been patchy over the last year or so, but every time I have seen him in the last 2 months, he has been awesome. andy cole played rather well last night as well.

Unfortunately, I find myself agreeing with LR. Good game, good atmosphere, and .... glug... good performance by manure. Can't stand the bar steward, but I thought Keane's display was awesome. Bah, humbug!

As a football match it had its moments I suppose. Thats all.

This is not an anti-Newton Heath posting.......I only saw the first fifteen minutes or so of the game so can't comment too much on it.....but by Christ that Batistuta shot was one of the sweetest, cleanest, hardest and best contrived goals out of nowt I have seen in a long time. The speed swing and swerve were awesome.

I understand from reports that Keane's goal was a good one, but I'm sure it couldn't have been better than theirs.

If I could buy one player for nufc

it would have to be Harry Kewell.

And no I'm not being patriotic or anything. I think he's better than Ryan Giggs. People may view his long term future as a striker, but I'd play him on the left, with Dyer on the right and a defensive central pairing.

Watched last nights game last night. Funny about that eh.

Anyway, I have a question or comment or two.

Why do UEFA and Champions league matches seemed to be played on larger pitches?, or is just that NUFC have a small pitch?

I love watching games on large grounds, as the size of the ground usually makes the game more open (funny that), slows the play down, encourages players to run at defenses, allows a better passing game and a lot of other things.

Where-as the play at ST James Park is often compact, harried and doesn't allow some players to capitalise on their abilities. Yes I understand that we play with no wingers, but hell we have the players on the right that would benefit from a wider ground. And if Domi plays at left back and was supported by Speed playing in a defensive midfield capacity capacity, I don't think there'd be a problem.

As it is, Dyer and Solano, and assuming Gavilan as well don't/won't get the chance to play their best as the smaller ground means they have less space between then and their opponants. Domi only gets space as there is no else on the left for the opposition to defend so they crowd the right of midfield. And Dunc and Al would benefit as well.

Oh and, as much as I hate to say it, well done Newton Heath.

Tre,

I'd be interested to find the actual dimensions of the pitch at SJP and compare them with OT and Highbury. Certainly, Highbury does not meet FIFA standards in terms of distance from the yobs
Are you sure it isn't just an optical illusion caused by the stands etc and the desigm of British stadia compared with Johnny Foreigner's? Many continental stadia have a running track around them which can give the impression of greater open space.

Mind, if you are right and we are to rectify the situation, the precedent has already been set and we might expect all lower tier seats to be removed and their occupants removed to above the cloud line!

I`m with Tre - Kewell for me - he is looking so good right now.

Other observations: Keane was awesome, big, big player, but I wouldn`t want him because he can also be a big liability.

Batistuta`s goal - pure magic! One of the biggest disappointments in football to me is, why, when he is obviously such a gifted player, does he constantly cheat! (That having been said, he seemed to play a pretty honest game against `the red ones`). Also, one further, very stupid observation - Batistuta look exactly like I would imagine Jesus to look like. Well I did say it was a stupid observation! (;o)

O.K. so who didn`t like my answer? No need to put a line through it though! ;o)

Screach

I actual base my observation on two things. Both taking into account where the cameras filming the pictures seem to be located.

1) The percieved players size in relation to the pitch size. A spacial measurement type thingy. Were players on Manu's or Barcelona's pitch seemed to be dwarfed by the grass surface area inside the borders. Where as at NUFC the players larger when related to the pitch.

2) The amount of open spaces, the size of them and generally the area of territory it seems players have in which to operate. On smaller grounds, it's easier to mark some one closser and therefore close them down quiker, than on large grounds.

On my tape of NUFC 3 v Manu 0, most players were closed down quickly, unless play was suddenly switched from one area of the park to another. Last night this was not the case, as players on both teams often were able more time to weigh up there options before being hassled by an opponant.

will somebody please disable the bloody "strikethrough" html tag that Screacher enabled in his earlier post?

Did that work? Could I now annoy the netscape users by adding the Blink tag and not ending it?
