MEXICO CITY (March 15) XINHUA - Hundreds of residents were evacuated Wednesday from their homes in Mexico's Baja California State where a train pulling butane gas tanks derailed, security authorities said.

The accident, occurring in the La Mesa zone, was attributed to the bad state of the railroad, said Fire Department commander Carlos Gopar in Tijuana City of that state, 2,126 kilometers northwest of the Mexican capital.

The train, bound to Compania de Gas in Tijuana, was pulling five tank wagons filled with butane gas that had been coupled to it in the U.S. city of San Diego.

Firemen doused the five tank wagons with water to cool them as they were exposed to intense sunlight, said Gopar.

Houses located within a radius of two blocks around the site were evacuated, he said, adding that the derailment caused no victims.

Municipal civil protection director Antonio Rosquillas said that the zone of the accident was cordoned off and that the discharge of the 33, 000 liters of butane gas contained in the wagons would take at least 12 hours.
