LOS ANGELES, March 14 (UPI) -- A tire fell from an airliner on approach to Los Angeles International Airport and landed in an intersection near a school and bounced into a church parking lot at an estimated 200 miles per hour.
Television station KNBC said no one was hurt when the 60-pound tire bounced off the pavement at Firestone and Madison in the city's Southgate district, then cleared a two-story building and fell into an empty parking lot.
The wheel came from the nose landing gear of American Airlines flight 2425, a Boeing 757 en route from Dallas-Fort Worth to LAX with 111 people aboard, at around 2 p.m., KNBC said. The reason it dropped off was not immediately known, but an investigation was started.
The airliner has two tires on its nose gear and landed without incident. KNBC said the crew was unaware they had lost the tire. -- Copyright 2000 by United Press International. All rights reserved. --
