50,000 gallons lost when tower valve malfunctions

Published Tuesday, March 14, 2000, in the Herald-Leader

An electrical short resulted in the loss of about 50,000 gallons of water at the Kentucky American Water Co. tower on Mercer Road yesterday.

The leak occurred about noon when a remote terminal computer that controls the valve shorted out, causing it to remain open, said Barbara Brown, director of communications at the water company.

A repairman was sent to the location within 30 minutes of the spill occurring, she said.

The tank is being operated manually until a replacement valve can be installed, Brown said.

The leak did not result in any damage to surrounding property or a disruption of service to customers, she said.
