What do you think about OK hosting an urban rogaine?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

I have often thought it might be interesting to organize an urban rogaine (i.e. a score orienteering event with a long time limit). What I had in mind was a 6-hour event in Lawrence. It would be relatively easy to organize. There are several maps we could use: the old street-O' map, the Lawrence tourist info map (a very nice map produced, in part by George McCleary), or the USGS topo.

What do you think?

Any way to incorporate a version of Capture the Flag? I always thought an adult version of this game would be fun over a larger area and longer time.

Second thought: What about a variation wherein more detailed maps of smaller areas with controls are put out at control points? We have a number of little maps in Lawrence, including a couple of the grade schools -- if anyone knows where they are...

That sounds interesting. One would expect a small (but elite) field for something like that. Running for 6 hours on the pavement is not an easy task. Fritz's idea of using mapped parks and things might help to break that up and prevent people from coming down with injuries. I would assume that the event would be scheduled for Fall, perhaps it could become Dan's Fourty.

... I have a better thought. How about making the rogaine this year's Quantrill's? It could be run starting at midnight for 6 hours and would end a while after sunrise. While the people who want to run it are out running, others may stay around the finish area ready to bake the pancake breakfast.

I like Mook's idea of having an urban rogaine as Quantril's Quandary. The midnight start time is not something I'd like, though.

Yup, but I bet that's what Quantrill's men said about the time he chose to attack Lawrence, too.

Yes - QQ ROgaine. . . I too have reservations about a midnight start. Maybe a 5 AM start, then finish with a late breakfast? Mean Mean Gene

Yes, a start when it's dark and we can scare the bejeezus out of the Lawrence locals running around in headlamps! Of course, some of the markers would have to be historical and contestants might even be required to drink alcohol and yell slanderous statements (a beer chase rogaine?)

In order to garner more publicity for the sport, I think if I am meet director not only will there be a midnight start, competitors will have to carry guns or be disqualified.

I think Snorkel's ankle must be getting better.
