My HP PhotoSmart scanner won't scan at 2400 dpi

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

My HP PhotoSmart photo scanner used to scan o.k. at its highest resolution, 2400 dpi. Recently it has refused to do so. It makes a peculiar sound like gears grinding every 7 or 8 seconds and reverses directions. The film or slide moves forward, then back. It just oscillates like that and no scanning occurs. Scans at the lower resolutions still work o.k. If anyone knows what is going on, please let me know. Is this a problem with the scanner, the computer, or the software?

sounds like a bandwith problem... the harddisk cannot write fast enough... make sure you dont have anything running in the background that is touching the harddisk, and nothing is using the cpu during the scan... have you defrag'd your drive lately? how much ram do you have?
