FOUND!!! Program that will convert AVI to Playstation stream format!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

i know this is sort of pushing it forum wise, but it does concern an avi so. i just got hold of a cool program that will convert an avi file into a playstation stream format(.str)!!! The .str files are what the psx uses to view full motion vidoe on their games. NOTE YOUR SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE MODDED FOR IT TO WORK ALTHOUGH THEIR ARE ALWAYS SOME EXCEPTIONS You need a gameshark, that has the option to "view the fmvs" (older ones do, the newer gameshark pros do not). You get the program, you convert an avi file to .str, you then burn it as a "data" cd with whatever it is you use to burn. Pop the sucker in your playstation, use the gameshark to check for the fmvs, when it does pick what you want sit back and watch, its pretty cool!!!.

i tested it last night with 2 clips lifted from a sega game. it played the first one fine, but the second clip froze in some parts. Im still doing testing on it. Also for some reason 2 clips i had as an mpeg first then converted to avi with virtual dub, gave me the message "no data to convert from" whatever the hell that means.

Well go here and you can dl this and other cool programs

I don't know how this pertains to VCD but if this program you speak of is what I think it is, you forgot to mention that the AVI must be 320X240 resolution and UNCOMPRESSED AVI.

Also, the video quality of .STR (psx video format) video is sub VHS.

Well, one this program is very hard to get, 2 you can techinaclly put your films on this format and watch it in the psx (why is beyond me) but you can do it. it comes with a good help file as well as directions

Well the uncompressed file at 320 wide only has to be expanded to 352 during mpeg encoding and you will have an excellent end result and a hell of a lot better than you think because everything else we do is based on a system that already contains losses due to the massive compressions at capture. Ever tried making vcd's from un compressed avi files MrVCD and comparing them? Most publications tell you the uncompressed avi source material is the best but it usually involves about 7M/s of storage space even from the half frame. Its a good way to judge the level of your quality, because it aint going to get any bettter.

in Mr Vcd's defense, yes for some reason playstation game fmvs do have to be the 320 x 2 something (think its less then 240). This is probably why it would not accpet the two clips i converted from an mpeg. i also found out why my second clip skipped. its my psx laser. its been skipping the fmvs on games lately (just backups) normal ones still play fine. in Ross's defense. mr vcd the quality you get from an uncompressed image is awesome. you would loose nothing from an uncompressed file. Although you might loose some (if any) but unnoticeable quality from shrinking the file down to that size. or it might just do the opposite. Since it compresses the image more together it would look better. keep in mind some psx movie type games look as good if not slightly better then vhs (you havent seen the graphics for x files then i assume). So it is possible to have nice quality on them.

I've d/l the application...seems rather pointless if one needs the game shark as well. I thought it would be interesting for high end music vids or using vdub to make collages....psx's are so portable, and durable, that they're great to hook up anywhere. However, where the hell is one expected to buy an old game shark to do this. It would probably be better if there was a way that the str would self boot. Just a thought.

Try buying a pro action replay. the interface is not as beautiful but it works. Goldfinger will allow you to run it without a mod chip.

hi,

Okay so Ive come across these threads by accident but seem's Iam a nice guy I will explain what you need to do in order to watch PSX STR on a copyed psx cd and how to set that up.

1. The files do need to be exactly 320x240 unless they do not work.

2. The fact about being uncompressed avi's is rubbish, I have created a tool that doesnt require those, so you can use AVI's compressed to death hehe, xcept SMR,MPG. DIVX is best that's what I always use.

3. Tools needed SONYCDGEN,BUILDCD,CDRWIN,VIRTUALDUB,PsXVIDEO I have all these tools in a package along with a tutorial I wrote.

4. APPROX 40 minutes of video can be burned to a 700mb cdr, but all videos must be 15fps & 44.1Khz 16bit stereo sound.

5. The basic idea of these tools are that they build an ISO 9600 with psx bootable sector. Of course this is no good without the PSX VIDEO PLAYER... which are a couple of files which you put in the ISO that play movies on your PSX... no addon's like GS or any of those other lame GADGETS! =)... just a PSX with a mod chip, and if you dont have a chipped psx or a gameshark, GO HOME!.

6. If you have a copy of ADOBE theres even a tool in my package that you can edit TIM files that come with the PSX VIDEO PLAYER. This means you can create your own MENUS, for DIFF films whatever.

Anywayz, that.s all Iam gonna go into detail with, if you wanna know more contact me And I,ll send you my package.

PS: please remeber bfore contacting me you need a copy of CDRWIN burning tool. A BURNER & MODCHIP.. OR GAMESHARK.. dont bother me with stupid thing's if you need help then I,ll be glad to see what I can do.

Check this new TooL out,

It's a IMPORT PLAYER it defeats mod protection, and lets you choose a video mode before you boot a game. which is good if you have USA - NTSC games that you would like to boot in pal..

You need an str convertor and a vcd to mpeg to avi to str convertor to play vcd on your psx. Also you need to have a copy of your game..... ex. tony halk pro scater 2. You delete all the str and mov file also the xa file to make some room for the vcd file..... Convert the vcd to mpeg then to aiv then to str. After that.... rename your str( the movie from the vcd) to a file name that is alwready in the cd...... Use the secondary intro. Burn the damn thing and swap (playing games without a mod chip or boot disk) or just play...... If you dont get waht im saying ...l thewn e mail me.... also if you happen to have a faster converting program for aiv to str .... e mail me asap!!!!!!

I've programmed a STR player for the PSX that will play any res STR 256x240 -> 640x240 (6 video modes) Get it at ceddy.cjb.com

I have one question is there any program besides Sony's MovTools that will convert to STR? MovTools has a FAT16 problem that it can't read more than 2 Gigs.(= 9 mins uncompressed AVI) Please email me if you have a answer.

ok seriously though, read the answers ABOVE what you have posted and there are people that will give you a tutorial on converting to STR. and for the one who asks about "Playing SNES games on PSX" yes it is possible but the game's graphics will be slow as hell and you wont be able to play them, so its a waste of time and cds if you ask me.

One more thing, you will have to cut the movie that you want to convert to STR into 35minutes parts, because the STR file will be more than 700mb which is 1 cd, so for a movie that is 1:45, you will burn 3 cds just for that one movie. People say that i can convert the STR File to 1x instead of 2x so i can get the STR to be a 70minute movie, I tried that and the movie was playing too fast.

So, to me, its a waste of money and time because i used 3 cds to play a movie, and the quality of the STR sucks when i play it on the PSX. So not only i wasted 3 cds for just one movie, the quality sucked too. PLUS, it will not allow you to Fast Forward the movie or PAUSE or what ever. So come on guys it is not worth doing all this shit for that crap.

If you still want to do all of this look up for people's responses and email them for there tutorial
