FIVE DEATHS RESULT FROM CARBON DIOXIDE MISLABELED AS OXYGEN

Story Filed: Monday, March 13, 2000 4:22 PM EST

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Mar 13, 2000 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Five people died at a Puerto Vallarta hospital in western Mexico, after being administered carbon dioxide contained in mislabeled canisters, officials said.

Jalisco government spokesmen told EFE that two babies, a youth and two adults died Sunday when they were treated at a Health Ministry hospital facility.

A doctor and an employee has been detained in this case, the spokesmen said.

According to early police reports, the deaths resulted from an error in labeling the canisters as containing oxygen rather than carbon dioxide.

Mexican Health Minister Jose Antonio Gonzalez said Monday that a investigation was underway to determine if the error was made by the oxygen supplier or by the hospital. EFE.
