Why is Noah Wyle a supporting actor?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

I don't quite understand why all this time Noah Wyle has been in the supporting actor catagory for the Emmy's. I guess I know that someone has to be on a show with a big cast, but he was probably the biggest focus on the show (a new med student adjusting to the ER). In fact, looking back, he has at least 4 shows named about him (welcome back carter, john carter M.D., Dr. carter I presume, carter's choice) and overall he's had the most storylines probably over the past 6 years, along with Anthony Edwards, i bet more than even George Clooney (when he was on). Julianna Margulies has been considered lead actess: Eriq la Salle was considering supporting. Why is that, if anyone knows? Maybe that will change next year.

One more question...does anyone know what year(s) Noah Wyle was nominated?

The actors and actresses in shows submit each other for nominations. Noah Wyle was listed as a supporting actor so he wouldn't compete with Anthony Edwards and George Clooney who were up for best actor awards. It was the same with Sherry Stringfield and Julianna Margulies until Sherry left the show. It's a way for shows to submit and have accepted as many character nominations as possible.

In fact, Julianna Margulies was nominated in the supporting category her first year (first 2 years?) of ER. She seemed to be "promoted" into the lead actress category the same time Sherry Stringfield was departing- in season 3. Eriq LaSalle is still nominated in a supporting capacity- even though he has been listed in the lead credits since season 1. Laura Innes, who went from a guest star to a regular in season 2, is also nominated in a supporting capacity.
