Mats,

I usually find good info on the ENCYCLOPFDIA BRITANNICA site, here is their entry for "A.M. Cassandre":

http://www.britannica.com/bcom/eb/article/7/0,5716,20967+1,00.html

------------------------------------------------------------

Cassandre b. Jan. 24, 1901, Kharkov, Ukraine, Russian Empire [now Kharkiv, Ukraine] d. June 19, 1968, Paris, France

pseudonym of ADOLPHE-JEAN-MARIE MOURON, graphic artist, stage designer, and painter whose poster designs greatly influenced advertising art in the first half of the 20th century.

After studying art at the Acadimie Julian in Paris, Cassandre gained a reputation with such posters as "Itoile du Nord" (1927) and "Dubo Dubon Dubonnet" (1932). The Dubonnet posters were among the earliest designed specifically to be seen from fast-moving vehicles, and they introduced the idea of the serial poster, a group of posters to be seen in rapid succession to convey a complete idea.

In 1926 Cassandre cofounded the advertising agency Alliance Graphique and soon turned his attention to experimental typography. In 1929 he designed Bifur, a new typeface. Later, he designed two other typefaces, Acier Noir (1935) and Piegnot (1937). In 1939 he abandoned poster art and henceforth devoted himself to designing stage sets and to painting.

I have been working on a couple of papers on Cassandre for school. I have found a source that lists his American commissions. He performed alot of work for the magazine Harper's Bazaar, Cassandre also worked with two "modern image" coporations with somewhat of a Peter Behrens style. He created the wartime ad campaign for CCA (container corporation of america). It was a multitude of advertisements telling citizens how cardboard packaging was helping the war effort in everyday life. He reduced ideas to practical tips on saving lumber, shipping rations and understanding how everyday practices benifited the war effort. He also received commissions from N.W. Ayer Corporation. I am not sure what works were created for them. N. W. Ayer was America's first full service ad agency that began in the 1870's (?) If you learn of any sources shoot some mail. j.e.s.

Thanks. I am trying to design a site dedicated to A. M. Cassandre. We got an assignment where we would try to find a way to give information about Cassandre to our teacher. And so I thought, since I am very interessed in Webdesign, that I'd create a website. This has helped me quite alot.
