Another One - Acch!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : People Photography : One Thread

Yet another one of these lonely alley shots - it's a trend on this forum. This is a favorite of mine. It's got all sorts of things wrong with it which kind of make me like it.

I'm certainly enjoying this thread of photographs that so closely resemble each other. This one is so close to my "Man on Street" one that it's erie. OK, Jeff, so what's wrong with this one? A foreground subject would be good for this shot.

By the way, how do you do your borders?

It's got all sorts of things wrong with it... I'll bet you don't like the 1/2 Nun at the corner. Life's tough, aint it? I like the contrast between the busy asymmetrical walls and the broad open floor. And the shadow of the hidden Nun. Hey, that's the name of my next band, "One Half Nun" ... t

Tony, the borders are just a full-frame printing, including what's outside the image area for a millimetre or two (from the negative's position). If you do your own printing, you can file out your carrier (otherwise you'll get boring, straight edges, nothing like this). If you go to a lab for prints, ask for a "full rebate" which is what including the edges is called, for some reason, a "rebate"...shawn

Um, I take it back. I think this shot stands on its own w/o a foreground subject because of the issue of depth. The same issue is maybe true of "Lady Walking." Another thing about this one is that it is a sigature "Spirer" photograph; something I've been trying to accomplish for myself.

Oops, forgot to add. Yes, I'm familiar with the oversized neg. carrier. I just figured there may be something else to it. I do a lot of mine in full frame mode with the 25x37 carrier for the 24x36mm format, but the edges are completely straight. I like the rough edges here and elsewhere.

There's a way to cheat on the borders, but it only works with digital manipulation. Just paste them in from another photograph.
