Dell Moves to Fix Memory Glitch

Story Filed: Thursday, March 09, 2000 6:09 PM EST

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp. (DELL.O), the world's No. 2 personal computer maker, said on Thursday it was working with customers to replace faulty memory chips that could affect up to 400,000 notebook computers it shipped last year.

Dell has recently advised customers who bought Latitude and Inspiron notebooks computers shipped between February and November of 1999 that the RAM chips inside their machines might need replacing, Dell spokesman Rob Crawley said.

Between 200,000 and 400,000 notebook computers could contain the defective chips, he said, noting that some of the notebooks contained two of the chips and others only one.

Crawley declined to identify the company that supplied the chips, saying Dell was pleased that the supplier was cooperating with Dell to diagnose and replace any faulty chips free of charge to the company's customers.

Problems caused by the faulty chips include making the computer freeze when it is placed in ``suspend'' mode to conserve battery power.

Crawley said that tracking down and replacing the defective chips would not result in any material costs for Dell.
