BBS update from Dunc

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Right. You'll have noticed I've set up categories for the postings; you're given the opportunity to choose which category when you post the new thread.

If your message doesn't fit, it'll get bumped into the 'Uncategorised' category; however, I reckon after a couple of weeks, we'll have a reasonable number of categories that cover most things.

Obviously within those categories, the threads can broaden out.

Phew!

To be shot down but shouldn't there be a "Hedge Cutting" Category??

If I start a superstitions category Gav'll tan my hide! ;-)

-- Anonymous, March 07, 2000

Hey I liked the superstitions thread :))

Maybe we should give this place awhile before we put that kind of strain on it though :))

I'm beginning to like this place more and more!!

Great work, Dunc! You're certainly earning those pints!

Whats a cookie, and dont say a rich digestive, always go by your slowest doh, Buff

Buff - lang tyme nee see young'un. Good to see you here.

A "cookie" is a very technical thing which I have no idea how to descibe. But I think it is a way in which the "server" (call it the BBS) talks behind the scenes to the user (you!). The cookie holds particular information about you so Duncan can make unreasonable demands of you when the missus asks.

One of the nice things it can do is hold your signon information so that you don't have to key it in each time you post a message (but mek shure ye get it right - the one you used here looks a tad dodgy. Ye hevn't been hittin' the bottle hev ye??). Anyway, In Netscrape, select "Edit" then "Preferences" from the menua bar at the top. Then click on "Advanced" (it's not really that advanced) and make sure you have accepted "Accept all cookies". I think that will do the biz fer ye.

Sorry, I've no idea in Internet Exploder.

Cookies are also a way in which any unscupulous person, can extract info from youre machine, such a passwords, serial numbers of running applications etc... Delve into registry settings, (Worried yet)!!

Kennyboy,

As far as I'm aware, 'normal' people like me can't extract that kind of data from your machine. There was some hoo-hah about this a while ago because of micro$oft trying to enforce an online signup policy to windows which surreptitiously grabbed all the info off your machine.

Cookies like the ones used here are dumb data; simply a line in a text file holding on to your BBS settings. Cookies only become interesting when I get access to your whole set of cookies so I can tell where else you've been and what you've been up to. It's unheard of for address and CC data to be stored in this way; programmers like me wouldn't attempt that in a zillion years....if you had your house burgled coz I'd set my server to store your address in a cookie that could be queried by anyone in the clear over TCP/IP then two things would happen. I'd get fired and you'd put my balls in a vice.

Don't be an idiot. Thatt's technophobia that is.

Try reading up on cookies and you'll see they're safe.

Well, this one looks like will last longer and will be the leading BBS after the old one. But for me it's a quite amusing to look on the threads title and the categories below. Do you think it is possible to make it on frames??? I'm downloading the page source and will try to make it on frames and will send it back later to Duncan and see if we can have this one looks like the communicata's BBS.

Cheers, Eddy

If anyone can, Eddy can. Nice to see you on here already marra, how are you? Hadn't heard a lot from you on Communicata before The End, glad to see you made it to one of the lifeboats.

-- Anonymous, March 08, 2000

Ditto Softie, re-Eddy. I heard a cry from afar and sent a lifeboat heading his wy. Thankfully he made it before he died from exposure!!

Great if we can get this "framified". Brilliant self help community work at it's best.

How do you get a subheading on a thread in bold. For example, on the transfer speculation thread there are 2 called 'Nobby' and 're:Nobby'.

One of these is indented, and I like to know how to do this as it makes reading the threads easier.

Now I've got used to using this BBS (remarkably quickly) it does seem rather good.

Umm. I've a rudimentary frmed version kicking around, but there's stuff needs to be done at the DB level too (which is far harder). Please, nobody attempt any off-line code rewrites of HTML; everything you see here is generated on the fly from the DB, so you'd be wasting your time.

cheers

I found that somehow I managed to get one in bold but I don't know how.

-- Anonymous, March 08, 2000

Right...who brought the weird bugs from Communicata?

Next thi ng you k now we 'll be seeing random spaces i n the middle of t ext.

-- Anonymous, March 08, 2000

.....not too mension the appaluling spooling mistooks. I cynseerly hoep this palce is better fro taht.

-- Anonymous, March 08, 2000

re: bold

hopefully this should have a title????

-- Anonymous, March 08, 2000

this is the very amusing one, we didn't know how far one thread is going on so far, because we only saw the date of the first thread that appearing on the main page of this BBS. For this one I couldn't help much because the original set-up for this free service is on the greenspun. Maybe (Just maybe) me or anyone else on this comunity can search for the java script that can solved this problem.

By the way, still working on the frame stuff. I hope that I can work it out soon.

This place has a nice feel about it. Where is everybody?

-- Anonymous, March 13, 2000

Well I just posted an "answer" in an old thread of mine, and five minutes later it hasn't appeared at the top of the page in "Answers" yet.

Hey I wonder if this will?

-- Anonymous, March 17, 2000

Hi Duncan,

As you haven`t sent a password for my daughter yet, can we assume that she can use the same password as me? As we said, we share this computer anyway, and all mail arrives in the same place, although we both have our own e mail addresses.
