The Playstation 2 is a strictly DVD only machine. It will not play VCDs or SVCD. It will also not play CD-Rs due to copyright issues. As a side note, SVCD is only supported in China. Very few Japanese DVD and VCD units play it.

I don't know about vcds but I know it can play CD-R's. Pretty much every game i own are games that i downloaded and burnt onto a CD-R, and you can play them with a modchip. I have the external modchip =)

On the CD-R note , It can play CD-R's. I tried three last night.

Yet it couldn't play my Itital D VCD

The Ps2 can now play VCD well(mpeg 1,2 and 4 that is) And it can now play divX 5.xx and earlier and aswell as Mp3's. I recived a newsletter from DivX(tm) news and The company Broadq(www.broadq.com) has the software(called Qcast) to allow this to be done. The program uses a boot disc then uses the new Sony PS2 Ethernet adapter to access a computer on a network like a file server and now can stream the divx and mpeg files for playing on a stereo and tv system. I would really sugest that anyone who is interested in playing vcds or at that Divx(tm) files, check it out. I can't wait to see more compatible codecs to be added. Thought I should let others know since I have been looking for a way to play vcds on my Playstation 2.

xbaox game sr expensive, harly hyas ne good (only for xbox) games. The vcd player coauses error n the ms hotline costs soo much. I own both systems n ps2 has much better games and the network adpater is much better.

O.K. A LOT IS IN DEBATE I JUST GOT A V7 PS2,AND PUT IN A MAGIC 3.6 MOD,SO I DONT HAVE TO PATCH JACK,I CAN BOOT TO THE BROWSER;IT READS THE SVCD. Hmmm the Qcast an alternative to not being able to play cdr's in the playstation, can we copy divx and avis to dvd's and then play them on our platstation. but i read about the Qcast and it says it only works on the us version of the playstion as in british with a british playstion.

U can play divx on UK playstations utilising a program called PS2GEN which is a simple to use program wher you simply add a patch to the cdr prior to burning it. You can find this program easily aswell as instructions by doing a general search for it in Google. Hope this helps guys. VCDS CANNOT PLAY AT ALL WHAT SO EVER!

This is why so many people loved the Dreamcast, it was way ahead of its time, it played backup games, vcds, divx, mp3s, jpgs, internet, all without even a modchip!
